PORTLAND, Ore. — A popular plant-based Indian restaurant, The Sudra, announced on social media that it will be closing its doors after 10 years of business in Portland.
"This winter was the worst we’ve had in years," Sudra said in an Instagram post. "We were hoping things would pick up with the nicer weather but unfortunately that hasn’t been the case."
The Sundra plans to still serve food and drinks until the end of May at its location in Northeast Portland along 28th Avenue.
The restaurant once had multiple locations in Portland metro area, including a spot on North Mississippi Avenue, in the Pearl District and in downtown Beaverton.
The restaurant's founder Sanjay Chandrasekaran also co-owned a vegan Middle Eastern restaurant, Aviv, that had multiple locations — up until its closure in 2021, reported the Oregonian. Chandrasekaran then turned what-was a 7-month-old Aviv Pearl District location in the fourth Sudra.
Chandrasekaran also runs Rabbit Cafe, a downtown vegan bowl spot at U.S. Bancorp Tower.
The closure of Sudra, follows a number of other popular vegan restaurant closure in the Portland metro in the last several months, including Blossoming Lotus, Fermenter, Unicorn Bake Shop, and Sweet Hereafter.
