PORTLAND, Ore. — Portland just wrapped up the hottest month of July since record-keeping started back in 1940.

The average high of 87.8 degrees also broke an all-time record at being nearly 6 degrees hotter than the typical July in the Portland metro area, according to KGW meteorologist Rod Hill. But it wasn't just Portland that was hot; Salem, Eugene, Redmond and Baker City all set July records for hot weather.

Temperatures in July started out hot from the get-go, with a record-breaking heat wave over Fourth of July weekend that blanketed most of Oregon. During that time, Portland saw a high temperature of 104 degrees, while Salem reached triple-digit heat for a record five days straight, Hill said. Eugene tied the all-time hottest July temperature for the city with a high of 106 degrees.

It was the hottest July on record in Portland in over 80 years in 2024.

The highest temperature recorded in July in Portland stands at 107 degrees, set in 1965, according to Hill. The hottest all-time temperature is 116 degrees on June 28, 2021.

The hot weather is expected to continue into August, with record high temperatures at the beginning of the month, but outlook models show a potential for cooler days overall across Oregon compared to the ones experienced in July, Hill said.
