PORTLAND, Ore. — All lanes of Interstate 5 northbound near Southwest Terwilliger Boulevard in Portland are back open following a crash involving a car and a semi truck Monday morning.
The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) had closed the northbound lanes as crews worked to clear the vehicles from the road and clean up fluid spills
Around 2:53 a.m., Portland police received calls about a wrong-way driver heading southbound in the northbound lane of I-5. Officers first received reports about the driver near the downtown onramp at South Harbor Drive. About three miles from that location, the driver crashed head-on into a semi truck driving northbound just north of the Terwilliger Boulevard entrance, according to Portland police. The driver of the semi truck reported no injuries.
Officers found two people who appeared to be pinned inside the car. Portland Fire & Rescue and paramedics were able to safely get them out. They were taken to the hospital with injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening.
An officer criminally cited the wrong-way driver for DUI and reckless driving.
Police said a total of four vehicles were damaged "in two separate, but related crashes."
"I would describe it as miraculous that no one died," wrote Sgt. Kevin Allen with Portland police in an email to KGW.
