TIGARD, Ore. — Highway 217 is closed between Highway 99W and Greenburg Road in Tigard this weekend.
Starting Friday at 9 p.m., the stretch of highway closed in both directions until 5 a.m. on Monday, March 18. A detour directs drivers to take Highway 26, Interstate 405 and Interstate 5.
The temporary closure is part of the Oregon 217 Auxiliary Lanes Project, which aims to increase safety and cut down on bottlenecking on the highway. Construction crews have been adding auxiliary lanes, or ramp-to-ramp connections, between Highway 99W and Beaverton-Hillsdale Highway. The Oregon Department of Transportation said the auxiliary lanes will help ease some congestion and reduce crashes. The improvement project is expected to be finished at the end of 2025.
The Highway 217 closure is needed so that crews can work on demolishing the existing Hall Boulevard overpass, ODOT said. Crews have closed that overpass the next nine months. They will work on rebuilding it to make it wider with bike lanes and sidewalks that are compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Highway 217 carries about 120,000 vehicles per day, ODOT estimates, making it one of the busiest highways in Oregon.
