Portland Mayor announces new climate action proposals

The overall goal is to cut emissions and increase use of renewable energy.

PORTLAND, Ore. — Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler proposed new action Friday to take on climate change.

He wants to create an advisory board for the Portland clean energy fund. Restrict fossil fuel expansion and require more bike parking in buildings. The plans would have the city salvage and reuse building materials when buildings are demolished.

He also says he doesn't want oil trains running through the city. The overall goal here is to cut emissions and increase use of renewable energy.

The mayor said, “I’m to keeping this city on the front lines.”

The local chapter of the Citizens Climate Lobby, a group that advocates for national policies to address climate change, reacted to the mayor’s action plan.

Spokesperson Meera Ramachandran said they are “very appreciative that there’s any forward movement on climate change. The fact that he rolled out plans shows he understands the urgency of it.”
