PORTLAND, Ore. — Portland Thorns forward Sophia Smith has been named a finalist for the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) 2024 Most Valuable Player award.

This is the third year in a row Smith has been named for the shortlist. She last won the MVP award in 2022, making her the youngest Most Valuable Player in NWSL history, according to the organization. She was also named the Golden Boot winner after the 2023 season.

With this nomination, Smith seeks to win her third straight league award. If she does, she will become the second player in NWSL history to earn a second MVP title.

Smith finished the 2024 season with the third most goals scored in the league, despite missing some matches due to an ankle injury. In the 2024 season, she netted 12 goals in 20 matches, surpassing her 2023 Golden Boot record, according to the NWSL. She also became the third player in league history to have three 15-plus goal contribution seasons, joining Sam Kerr and Lynn Williams.

Smith, along with Sam Coffey, helped the U.S. women's soccer team take home the gold in the 2024 Paris Olympics, after beating Brazil.

Fans can vote until Nov. 15 at noon PT here. The award winners will be announced around the 2024 NWSL Championship, which is set for Nov. 23. The game kicks off at 8 p.m. ET at CPKC Stadium in Kansas City, Mo., airing live on CBS Television Network and streaming on Paramount+.
