'Such a violation': Portland man's new car left with $14K in damages after hit-and-run driver flees scene

A driver in a white Mercedes-Benz was caught on camera rear-ending a man's brand-new car before speeding off.

PORTLAND, Ore. — About two weeks ago, Herschel Lamb was coming from Vancouver to visit his friend living in Northeast Portland.

While his car was parked overnight, a white Mercedes-Benz hit his car at 3 a.m. — leaving $14,000 in damages to a car that only had 7,000 miles on it.

"It's just shocking," said Lamb. "I keep thinking, I am going to wake up and this is all a dream — but I think it's not going to happen. Now, I think it's for real."

Lamb is still in awe of how someone's reckless behavior could cause him so much grief.

He's a car enthusiast, who just bought a brand new 2024 Subaru Outback in October.

He didn't get much time to enjoy it, after someone rear-ended it on June 10th.

"My friends woke me up at 6:30 in the morning, to say my car had been hit. So I came downstairs and looked. Sure enough, there was extensive damage to it — and the neighbors caught it on the ring camera."

His friend's house is located off Northeast 72nd Avenue and Halsey Street. Neighbors nearby said they saw and heard the loud crash before the driver sped off.

When neighbors ran outside to capture the person's license plate, they had already made a quick right on Halsey Street.

"I'm assuming somebody was intoxicated at 3:30 in the morning," said Lamb. "Probably the bars closed and they were out. It's just amazing to me that somebody wouldn't stop and leave some information."

Lamb said he is still working things out with his insurance but probably won't have to pay a high deductible.

He also said his main concern is the value that his car lost and the accountability not taken.

"It's very violating and I realize could've been worse. I could've been in the car," said Lamb. "But it's just such a violation, when someone does something like this to you."

Now, the car was identified by Mercedes-Benz Portland as a Mercedes C model from 2015 to 2018.

Lamb filed a report with the Portland Police Bureau and is asking anyone with information to please come forward.
