PORTLAND, Ore. — A man who was struck by a passing freight train in Salem has died in the hospital from his injuries.

Around 6:40 a.m. on Wednesday, emergency responders were called to the Union-Pacific Railroad tracks around Center Street Northeast and 12th Street Northeast. Witnesses reported that the man was on a bicycle with the tires near the tracks. As the train approached with its bells and horns sounding, the man "backed the bike toward the tracks," Salem Police Department said.

The passing train struck the bicycle, which then spun the rider into the train.

The bicyclist, 32-year-old Taylor Anthony Ochoa of Nevada, was transported to Salem Health in critical condition. He died the next afternoon, Salem police said.

Traffic was closed around Mill Street Southeast to approximately Lamberson Street Northeast during the investigation. The train was released within three hours, Salem police said.

In late August, a separate train collision near Mill Street resulted in the death of a pedestrian. The identity of the person has not yet been released.
