SALEM, Ore. — A deadly train crash in the heart of Salem closed down multiple streets for several hours on Monday evening.
According to the Salem Police Department, a train hit a pedestrian at approximately 4:50 p.m., killing a man. The crash and resulting investigation on the north-south railroad tracks shut down east-west traffic from D Street Northeast up to Mill Street Southeast.
The train tracks run up behind North Salem High School. Salem police said that the railroad crew traveling northbound on the Union Pacific line reported the crash itself happened near D Street, east of Capitol Street Northeast.
Salem police first reported the incident just after 5:15 p.m. As of 7:50 p.m., the agency said that the train was moving again but it would take some time for it to clear the area and allow traffic to resume.
The rail line which runs north-south was closed between D Street Northeast and Mill Street Southeast while officers investigate the man's death, and a substitute train crew arrived, police said.
