1 arrested after hours-long standoff in Hazelwood neighborhood

Officers evacuated the neighborhood's residents as they negotiated with the suspect for multiple hours.

PORTLAND, Oregon — Portland Police said they arrested a man who had been pointing a gun at people in a restaurant parking lot in Hazelwood Friday night.

Around 10 p.m., officers responded to Southeast Stark Street. The suspect, identified as Stephen W. Sherill, moved to a breezeway of a nearby apartment building near Southeast 105th Avenue and Southeast Pine Street, refusing to surrender to officers, according to the Portland Police Bureau (PBB).

Officers evacuated the neighborhood's residents as the Special Emergency Reaction Team (SERT) and the Crisis Negotiation Team (CNT) unsuccessfully negotiated with Sherill, 35, for multiple hours. Aerosol irritant was then deployed, and Sherill was arrested early Saturday morning, at 3:21 a.m.

Southeast 105th Avenue was closed between Southeast Stark Street and East Burnside Street, and residents have returned to their homes.

Sherrill was booked into the Multnomah County Detention Center on three charges of menacing, PBB said.
