A man died at the hospital after accidentally setting himself on fire at a Beaverton park Tuesday afternoon, the Beaverton Police Department reported Wednesday.
Police identified the victim as 29-year-old Seyedali Seyedhosseini-Mazlaghani.
On Tuesday around 1 p.m., firefighters and police responded to Beaverton City Park. Police said Seyedhosseini-Mazlaghani lit a cigarette but he had accelerant on his clothing, causing him to accidentally catch on fire when he lit the cigarette, said Matt Henderson of the Beaverton Police Department.
A witness said Tuesday he saw Seyedhosseini-Mazlaghani ignite a lighter near his face, then start running after he was engulfed in flames before falling to the ground.
Bystanders had been able to put out the flames by the time emergency services arrived, according to Tualatin Fire and Rescue. Fire officials then called for a Life Flight helicopter. Seyedhosseini-Mazlaghani died at the hospital, according to the Beaverton Police Department.
