HOOD RIVER, Ore. — A large fire broke out early Friday morning in Hood River at a building materials store, prompting multiple fire agencies to respond.
Approximately 50 firefighters arrived at the scene, said Matt Adams, captain of West Side Rural Fire Protection District, one of the first responders to the fire.
The fire was reported just before 2 a.m. at Gorge Building Supply, located in the same building as Krieg Millwork & Building Supply, a lumber store on Frankton Road, according to Hood River Fire & EMS.
Multiple people called 911 to report the fire was spreading quickly. Videos shared with KGW show a large response and a massive plume of smoke and flames visible. No injuries were reported.
“I heard these very loud, strange popping sounds," said Julia Gonzales, who lives across the street. "I sat up and looked outside and just saw this massive inferno across the street — and it was the most terrifying thing I think I’ve seen in a long time.”
The fire moved through several buildings, and because of the size of the buildings, the materials inside and how large the flames were, the incident commander requested additional resources to the scene. Hood River Fire, as well as volunteer firefighters with Wy'East Volunteer Fire assisting the West Side Fire District, responded.
Gonzales said that the volunteer firefighters quickly took control of the situation when they arrived.
Firefighters evacuated one residence near the fire. An investigator with Oregon State Fire Marshal's Office is working to determine the cause of the fire.
