PORTLAND, Ore. — A suspect has been indicted for shooting and killing three people, including two Portland high school students, in March 2023, according to the Portland Police Bureau (PPB).
On March 25, 17-year-old Eskender Tamra, 19-year-old Babu "Isaac" Daudi and their friend, 20-year-old Patrick Johnson, were shot and killed while traveling in a vehicle near the intersection of Foss Avenue and North Foss Court in North Portland. The FBI believes they had left nearby University Park and were targeted by three people who fired numerous gunshots at their vehicle around 12:30 p.m. The victims tried to drive away, but the suspects chased after them and killed them, the FBI said.
Daudi was a senior at Roosevelt High School, and Tamra was a junior at Franklin High School, according to school officials. Both were described as "quiet, reserved and respectful."
The killings shook the North Portsmouth neighborhood as the deadliest that year, which also happened in broad daylight.
The FBI announced last year that it was offering a reward of up to $25,000 for information that leads to the identification, arrest and conviction of the suspects.
Ever since the shooting, detectives from PPB's Homicide Unit had developed information about a suspect, Omar Mohammed Osman, who is now 18 years old.
The case against him was presented to a grand jury in March 2023, by the Multnomah County District Attorney’s office. Osman had been in custody on unrelated charges at the MacLaren Youth Correctional Facility in Marion County.
A year later, on March 10, a grand jury indicted Osman on multiple charges, including six counts of first-degree murder, four counts of second-degree murder, seven counts of unlawful use of a weapon, two counts of unlawful possession of a firearm, seven counts of recklessly endangering another person and one count of first-degree animal abuse, PPB said.
Detectives are still seeking information about two additional suspects who are believed to be involved, PPB added on Friday evening.
“This broad daylight murder in a residential neighborhood not only was tragic because of the loss of three young lives, but it deeply rocked our whole community,” said Chief Bob Day in a statement, thanking multiple agencies and community members who shared information with police. “This indictment is the culmination of over a year of meticulous and challenging investigative work. ... It’s my hope that this indictment represents a first step toward healing for the hurting families of the victims, and our entire community."
