After 3-week search, mother of 2-year-old who died from suspected fentanyl exposure arrested in Seaside

Law enforcement had been searching for Mary Jacobo since the death of her 2-year-old child on Sept. 12. She was considered "armed and dangerous."

SEASIDE, Ore. — The mother of a 2-year-old who died from suspected exposure to fentanyl more than three weeks ago was arrested in Seaside, police confirmed.

Seaside Police Chief Dave Ham told KGW that Mary Jacobo was arrested Tuesday in Seaside and transported to the Clatsop County Jail on outstanding warrants. Ham said the Portland Police Major Crime Unit and Oregon State Police were the two agencies involved in the arrest.

According to Portland police, Jacobo was in possession of a gun at the time of her arrest, and officers seized the weapon.

Police had been searching for Jacobo since Sept. 12, when police said the 26-year-old left a mobile home park in Northeast Portland where her 2-year-old child went into cardiac arrest. The girl, Aurora, later died at the hospital. Evidence at the scene and conversations with hospital staff pointed towards fentanyl being a factor in her death.

Since Sept. 12, police said Jacobo was suspected of carjacking someone at gunpoint. She also had multiple warrants out for her arrest. Police said she was armed and dangerous.

Police released an earlier mugshot of Mary Jacobo in hopes the public can help locate her.

Family of the child spoke to KGW shortly after her death. They said Aurora was staying with her mother at a friend's house despite her mother not having custody.

"I hope that Aurora gets justice for what happened to her," Dominique Hodges, Aurora's cousin, told KGW. "She deserves justice, and Mary getting captured and having to answer for her crimes and what she did to Aurora — there's no justice, but we can settle for that."
