20-year-old Asher Ethan HK Mendes was shot and killed in Portland's Sellwood Riverfront Park on July 12.

PORTLAND, Ore. — A man is dead after being shot at Sellwood Riverfront Park late Friday evening.

On Monday, Portland Police Bureau identified the man as 20-year-old Asher Ethan HK Mendes. He died of a gunshot wound, the Medical Examiner's office said.

At 11:16 p.m. on Friday, officers responded to a report of someone having been shot in the park. When they arrived, they found Mendes dead.

Some residents said that they didn't know anything like that would ever happen in the area.

"Just kinda shocked. I've never heard of anything happening right at this park. You know, everyone is here and happy and having a good time playing with their dogs, and so, that's usually what's happening here," said Lea Flego.

Nicholas Bower said he visits the park often and has never even seen police in the area.

"You never really see anything going on here. It's usually really calm. People are happy. They're having a good time. Never see police. Never see people fighting," said Bower.

The suspect or suspects left the area before police arrived. No immediate arrests were made, police said.

The Portland Police Bureau's (PPB) Homicide Unit responded to the scene. Southeast Oaks Park Way was closed at Southeast Spokane Street during the investigation.
