Man in custody for suspicious death of 28-year-old Salem woman

A woman was found dead in the street near Mendocino Drive Northeast. Surveillance video shows a car driving around the area shortly before police were called.

PORTLAND, Ore. — Salem Police Department arrested a man Thursday morning in connection to the suspicious death of a Salem woman found lying in the road the early in the evening.

On May 23, officers found 28-year-old Carla Fernanda Vasquez in the area of Rural Avenue Southeast and Raynor Street Southeast. Surveillance footage near where Vasquez was found showed someone driving around the area shortly before police received the call regarding her body. The cause of death has not yet been reported. 

Officers took 38-year-old Atilano Davalos III into custody Thursday after Salem Police Department's SWAT Team, with detectives, served a search warrant near 2900 Mendocino Drive Northeast. Davalos has been charged with second-degree murder, according to the Salem Police Department.
