PORTLAND, Ore. — KGW News has won three regional 2024 RTDNA Edward R. Murrow Awards, including Overall Excellence for the second year in a row. The prestigious competition recognizes outstanding journalism in broadcast and digital news among fourteen geographical regions.

KGW competed in the northwestern U.S. region, which includes the five states of Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana and Alaska.

KGW earned the Overall Excellence award, the top honor, among large market television stations in the region. Sick Medicine, a KGW investigative documentary, won for News Documentary and Excellence in Innovation. The documentary examined what happens when the people charged with protecting patients and holding doctors accountable fail to do so. The documentary uncovered cases where doctors were allowed to continue practicing medicine even after being credibly accused of serious misconduct, including sexual abuse or gross negligence leading to the death of a patient.

Regional winners automatically advance to the national Murrow competition. Winners of the national awards will be announced in August.

“Our journalists consistently deliver exceptional work, and we’re truly honored by the recognition,” said Steve Carter, KGW’s president and general manager. “We take our responsibility to the community seriously and are fortunate to have incredibly talented journalists on our team.”

The Radio Television Digital News Association has been honoring outstanding achievements in electronic journalism with the Edward R. Murrow Awards since 1971.
