PORTLAND, Ore. — The Portland Bureau of Transportation is ready to use more salt on Portland roads this year during the winter.

PBOT used road salt for the first time last year and found it to be effective, said PBOT spokesman Chris Warner. This year, PBOT will be ready to salt three times the miles and use twice the number of machines that disperse the salt, Warner said.

PBOT's Winter Weather Center interactive map will continue to provide real-time information about snow plows and their routes, as well as access to PBOT cameras.

On Dec. 1, PBOT will host a winter-ready community open house, where they'll provide safe driving tips and hand out a free snow shovel to the first 100 people through the door.
