PORTLAND, Ore. — As icy conditions persist in much of the region, creating slick roads and walkways, some districts across Oregon have begun to cancel and delay classes for Thursday.
Portland Public Schools (PPS), Oregon's largest school district, announced Wednesday evening that classes will remain canceled for Thursday.
"We will not make a decision that endangers our community," PPS said earlier. "Persistent road conditions have made it impossible to assess bus routes and eleven of our school buildings."
The Portland metro saw around a quarter-inch of ice accumulation, with Portland seeing 0.23 inches and Vancouver 0.21 inches, according to KGW Meteorologist Rod Hill. Further south got a half-inch or more, with Salem recording 0.49 inches and Corvallis 0.68 inches.
The region was expected to gradually warm throughout the day on Wednesday, starting with areas getting east wind flow from the Columbia River Gorge, marking the end of the storm and heralding in mild and rainy weather. But ice has been slow to recede in many areas.
Below is a look at what school districts are planning for Thursday, Jan. 18, organized by county (the list below is current as of Wednesday evening).
Clackamas County:
- Colton School District: 3 hours late.
- Oregon City School District: Closed
- Oregon Trail School District: Closed. Closed Thursday, Jan. 18 and Friday, Jan. 19.
- Estacada School District: 2-hour delay.
- Lake Oswego School District: Closed. More info here.
- Canby School District: All schools are on a distance learning format. No preschool. CHS starts at 8:40 a.m. All other schools start at 9:30 a.m. Watch for Zoom information from your student's teacher.
