Some Oregon districts cancel Monday classes amid winter weather recovery

While Portland starts to thaw out, much of the Gorge is still buried in ice. Some school districts have canceled or issued a two-hour late start.

PORTLAND, Oregon — As a series of winter storms rocked Oregon — schools closed down. Some students had a total of four days off, including Oregon's largest school district, Portland Public Schools (PPS).

PPS will be reopening Monday morning aside from a few schools still facing damage from the storms.

Late last week, the district announced that classes would remain canceled for Friday — marking the fourth snow day. PPS cited refreezing and a travel advisory in place at the time through Friday morning.

KGW meteorologist Joe Raineri said after seeing, snow and ice this past week, we're going to see conditions improve over the next several days. Thanks to a more southerly flow, the metro area might be seeing warmer weather starting Monday with highs around the low 50s — with scattered showers a good part of this week.

The metro area might be seeing warmer weather, but there's still going to be areas of freezing rain in the Gorge overnight Sunday and into early Monday morning.

PPS said Markham Elementary, Forest Park Elementary, Ainsworth Elementary, Robert Gray Middle School, and the head start program at the Kelly Annex will be closed to kick off the week.

Several schools in Beaverton and Portland have dealt with frozen pipes following winter storms over the past few days. PPS is also working on some repairs. They’ve seen burst pipes, frozen boilers and schools without electricity across the district.

A PPS spokesperson told KGW most of the shuttered schools are dealing with water damage due to busted pipes and will be cleaning up all week. The district hopes to reopen Ainsworth Elementary on Tuesday and the rest of the schools not until next week.
