PORTLAND, Ore. — Around 30 large trees came crashing down at Mt. Tabor Park in Portland during last week's snow and ice storm, making it difficult to access many parts of the park.
Several downed trees destroyed areas at the top of Mt. Tabor, including a picnic shelter that has been there for more than 50 years, according to Portland Parks & Recreation.
"There's a lot of trees down up there and the picnic shelter is crushed ... it's pretty dramatic," said Alec Burton, who lives nearby.
Portland Parks & Recreation said that it will take several days for crews to fully access the damage and several days before any cleanup can begin.
The trees came down in the snow, sleet and wind storm last week that caused the power to be knocked out to more than 120,000 households.
A community group, Friends of Mt. Tabor, is also working with city officials to help restore the park from the winter storm's damage.
"The scale of the destruction is just startling," said neighbor Kathleen Cornett.
Currently, gates to the park remain locked with vehicle access limited, as crews work to address safety issues caused by the storm.
