PORTLAND, Ore. — With freezing rain in the forecast, airlines at Portland International Airport (PDX) canceled and delayed flights Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.
According to FlightAware, the airport has had 118 delays and 136 cancelations Wednesday. PDX said in an email that approximately 10 of those are due to the 737 Max 9 groundings, as well as flight crews having a difficult time reaching the airport.
PDX said in an email early Wednesday evening that "We don't currently have an estimate on when flights will return to normal, as it's fully weather dependent and much of that relies on the airlines, but surface temperatures are trending in the right direction."
Currently, one runway, the primary south runway, is open at the airport, with maintenance teams deicing it through the morning, the airport said. All other runways will remain temporarily closed to keep the main one operational.
Overnight, the airport temporarily closed all runways citing safety reason due to the icy conditions. Three flights were diverted during that time.
Travelers can check their flight statuses at flypdx.com/flights.
The National Weather Service (NWS) issued an Ice Storm Warning for much of the Willamette Valley, parts of the northern and central Oregon coast (except for the immediate coastal areas), and southwest Washington. It went into effect at 2 p.m. in the Portland area and will remain in place until Wednesday morning.
Much of the metro area received about a quarter-inch of ice, easily enough to make the roads dangerous.
This is a developing story and may be updated with more details as they emerge.
