SALEM, Ore. — With several consecutive days of temperatures at 100 degrees or hotter, Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek has declared an extreme heat emergency for the entire state.

The governor's office is urging people to take every precaution necessary to stay safe and avoid heat-related illnesses and to check on their family and neighbors. Kotek also urged Oregonians to conserve energy and reduce consumption as much as possible to avoid straining the power grid. She also asked people to take extreme caution and preventive measures to reduce the risk of fires.

"Both the record-breaking temperatures and the duration of heat present a clear and present danger, particularly for children, elders, people with disabilities, and people who work outside. I am urging Oregonians to take every precaution and check on your family and neighbors," Kotek said.

Temperatures are forecasted to hit triple digits through at least Monday, July 8.

Kotek's office is working with state, local and tribal agencies to coordinate response efforts.
