PORTLAND, Ore. — The Portland metro area is expected to go from winter to summer in four days with the possibility of a five-day run in the 80s starting Thursday — and potentially a 90-degree day on Friday.
It will be a welcome break from the loop of rainy, wintery weather the Portland metro area has been under. So far, the region has seen two-thirds of the monthly average rainfall in May in just the first five days of the month. But all of that is soon to change.
The warm-up will start Wednesday afternoon, with temperatures in the high 60s. Then, things are expected to heat up into the 80s starting Thursday, with the possibility of a 90-degree day on Friday, according to KGW meteorologist Chris McGinness.
"90s in May is something that happens maybe once in every four years in Portland, on average, since records have been kept at PDX since 1941," McGinness said Monday morning.
Last year, the Portland metro area saw five 90-degree days in May.
The five-day run in the 80s will the be the warmest weather to hit the region so far this year. But before it does, McGinness said the beginning of this week will bring at least a day or more of rain.
