Wet weather ahead: What to expect with this week's rain forecast

The Portland metro area will see rain most hours of the week, with only occasional rain and sunbreaks on Friday.

PORTLAND, Oregon — We may be only a few days into fall, but summer already feels far behind us with the abrupt shift in the weather

The Portland metro area will see rain most hours of the week, with only occasional rain and sunbreaks on Friday.

A large low center offshore continues to push rain inland, moving south to north across the region, according to KGW meteorologist Rod Hill.

"The forecast is on track and projecting rain most hours through Wednesday morning, followed by occasional rain into the day Friday," Hill said.

As of Monday afternoon, Portland International Airport has picked up more than 0.6 inches of rainfall since Sunday. Additional rainfall will push Portland metro area rain totals to two inches between Sunday through Thursday, according to Hill. A surface cold front is expected to bring heavier rain to the Willamette Valley Tuesday night and early Wednesday. Hill is also tracking the chance of thunderstorms in Portland.

People on the Oregon coast are in for rain, lightning and wind this week. Rain totals from Sunday to Thursday will likely top three inches, according to Hill. Lightning has been detected offshore and there's the possibility for more later on Monday and into Tuesday. Hill is also tracking breezy to gusty south winds that may peak at 45 mph on Monday and Tuesday.

Snow levels are around 8,000 feet and will lower near 6,000 feet on Tuesday and Wednesday, bringing the chance for new snow to fall at Timberline Lodge.
