Watch: Lightning strike in West Hills of Portland

The National Weather Service tweeted that a lightning strike was detected in the Raleigh Hills-Oregon Zoo area, west of downtown Portland.

PORTLAND, Ore. — As if the Portland metro area didn’t have enough weather events this weekend, many were shaken by the loud boom of thunder on Sunday night.

The National Weather Service tweeted that a lightning strike was detected in the Raleigh Hills-Oregon Zoo area, west of downtown Portland.

Charles Akimoto was driving near West Burnside and Skyline Boulevard when his vehicle's dashcam caught the flash.

KGW viewers reported hearing thunder shortly after 10 p.m. in West Linn, Milwaukie, Southeast Portland, Southwest Portland, Lake Oswego and Tigard. Some even reported seeing lightning.

Others didn’t hear thunder or see lightning but commented about the howling winds and downpour that fell on most of the metro area.

The thunder and lightning followed a weekend that saw some parts of the metro area, primarily north and east of Portland, get blanketed with snow.
