SPOKANE, Wash. — The National Weather Service office in Spokane, Washington confirmed a landspout tornado west of Davenport at 4:50 p.m. Tuesday afternoon. A trained spotter recorded the rotating condensation funnel on the ground. There is no confirmed damage at this time.
A landspout tornado is a non-supercell tornado. Different from a supercell tornado, landspouts typically form from the ground up to the cloud and tend to be a bit weaker than their supercell counterparts. Most are EF-0 or EF-1 in strength.
Tuesday’s sighting occurred along the outflow boundary of a stronger storm cell Tuesday afternoon. The National Weather Service office shared photos of the landspout taken from the Old Sunset Highway looking Northwest over open fields.
More rain and even thunderstorms are in the forecast this week. Thankfully, no severe weather is expected at this time. While landspounts are rare for our region, the cold atmosphere overhead this time of year makes them more common than what we might see later into spring and summer.
