PORTLAND, Ore. — Tuesday afternoon highs in the upper-30s improved driving conditions for the Wednesday morning commute, but motorists should keep an eye out for spots of ice on roadways.
Temperatures dipped below freezing Tuesday night
"Any slush that’s left on the roads is going to refreeze and we’re going to have slippery conditions in spots [Wednesday] morning," said KGW Meteorologist Matt Zaffino.
"The sky is going to clear and it's going to get colder tonight than it was last night."
Icy roads prompted school closures and delays, slowed traffic and caused several wrecks Tuesday morning.
The Portland Bureau of Transportation advised people to delay travel if possible, but said if you must travel, take public transit.
Southbound Northeast 148th Avenue at Glisan was closed early Tuesday after a car slid into a gasoline tanker, but reopened later in the morning.
No injuries were reported, but Portland police say Northeast Glisan was one of the slickest and most dangerous streets Tuesday.
Several wrecks were also reported at Northeast Sandy Boulevard and 82nd Avenue.
There is a 'potentially significant' snow storm headed for the Portland area this weekend, according to the Seattle office of the National Weather Service.
The Multnomah County Joint Office of Homeless Services has declared a severe weather alert and opened severe weather shelters throughout the community.
