PORTLAND, Ore. — There is no doubt you have noticed the cool and rainy days we’ve seen so far this month, but all of the rain, which is now at more than three inches, has been wreaking havoc on some plants.
The two things that are causing issues this spring are fungus and pests.
Dash Schenk with who’s the district manager with The Davey Tree Expert Company says the heavy rain we’ve seen the last couple of weeks has helped spread the fungus problem plants and vegetables are seeing. He said the rain and makes them last a lot longer. Schenk says it’s the right temperature, the right moisture, and the conditions are more favorable for them.
The other problem has been Japanese beetles, you may have seen them in your yard this spring. They may appear small in size, but they cause a big problem when it comes to your plants.
“They are such a problem because they’re invasive they’re not from here and they can attack over three hundred types of species, and the adults feed off the flowers and fruit,” said Schenck. Dash says there a couple of ways to protect your yard, he says you can treat plants with different oils, fungicides and pesticides.
The one thing that Schenck says a lot of people forget is fertilizer. Just like your vegetable garden needs fertilizer, so do your trees.
