Mother Teresa will be made a Catholic saint after Pope Francis approved the miracle needed for her canonization, an Italian newspaper reported Friday.

The Avvenire newspaper said the pope approved the miracle on Thursday afternoon. It is related to the inexplicable cure of a Brazilian man with multiple brain tumors. The Avvenire newspaper is affiliated with Italian Catholic bishops.

Mother Teresa, who died in 1997 age 87, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize after dedicating her life to working on behalf of the poor, particularly in the slums of Calcutta, India. She was beatified in 2003, the first step toward becoming a saint.

One miracle is needed for beatification while sainthood requires two.
