Alaska Airlines flights resume after brief nationwide grounding; PDX may see delays throughout day

The ground stop went into effect around 7:30 a.m. and the order expired at 8:30 a.m. The airline said it was due to a technical issue that was quickly fixed.

PORTLAND, Ore. — The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) temporarily ordered a nationwide grounding of all Alaska Airlines and Horizon flights Wednesday morning due to a technical issue.

A Port of Portland spokesperson confirmed that Alaska Airlines flights out of the airport were temporarily impacted, but characterized the situation as an airline issue rather than anything to do with PDX's operations. A number of flights arriving and departing Portland International Airport were impacted, according to FlyPDX.com.

The website showed a handful of delayed Alaska Airlines departures on Wednesday's schedule, but most were still listed as on time. Arrivals were more heavily impacted; most Alaska Airlines flights that were set to arrive in the late morning or early afternoon were listed as running late.

In a statement, Alaska Airlines said travelers could see "residual delays" throughout the day Wednesday.

The airline said it requested the ground stop out of an abundance of caution due to an issue that came up during an upgrade to the "system that calculates our weight and balance," which was quickly mitigated. The ground stop went into effect around 7:30 a.m. and the order expired at 8:30 a.m.

"We have begun releasing flights. Residual delays are expected throughout the day. We apologize for the inconvenience and encourage guests to check the status of their flights on alaskaair.com or the Alaska App prior to heading to the airport," Alaska Airlines said.
