Steel Bridge multi-use path closes for repairs

The path for bicyclists and pedestrians on the lower deck of the bridge will be closed this week.

PORTLAND, Ore. — Bicyclists and pedestrians will be rerouted across the Steel Bridge this week as contractors conduct repairs.

The multi-use path on the lower deck of the bridge between Tom McCall Waterfront Park and the Eastside Esplanade will be closed from Monday, Dec. 18th through Friday, Dec. 22nd from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.

The closure of the lower deck is for the safety of travelers. During the closure, those walking or biking can access the upper deck of the bridge between downtown and the east side of the Willamette River or use an alternate route, the Portland Bureau of Transportation said.

Contractors for the Oregon Department of Transportation will be making repairs to the bridge from a barge using a lift.

The Steel Bridge opened in 1912. It is owned by Union Pacific Railroad. The lower deck is maintained by the City of Portland. The upper deck is managed by TriMet and used for vehicle traffic including MAX and buses.
