PORTLAND, Ore. — A sinkhole discovered Thursday at the intersection of Northwest 23rd Avenue and Northwest Northrup Street has disrupted part of the Portland Streetcar's NS Line and is also impacting traffic through the area. Northwest 23rd Avenue is still open to vehicles, but the Portland Bureau of Transportation urged drivers to avoid the intersection if possible.
Streetcar service is suspended for stations along Northwest Northrup and Lovejoy Streets, with shuttle buses taking passengers through the area, according to the Portland Streetcar Twitter account. Service will likely remain suspended in the area until as late as Sunday, according to PBOT and Portland Streetcar.
PBOT posted a photo to social media showing a sizable hole in the intersection right next to the edge of the streetcar track, where the track turns from Northwest Northrup Street onto Northwest 23rd Avenue. It's not clear whether the hole originally opened to that diameter or if PBOT crews had already excavated it further to begin repairs when the photo was taken.
The sinkhole was apparently first discovered Thursday morning; the Portland Streetcar account first tweeted about a line disruption and a possible sinkhole just before 11 a.m.
This is a developing story and will be updated if more information becomes available.
