PORTLAND, Ore. — Interstate 84 has reopened in both directions following an hours-long crisis negotiation with a woman in distress.
Portland police posted an update on Twitter and said that after more than five hours of negotiations with the bureau's Enhanced Crisis Intervention Team and an officer from the Crisis Negotiation team, the woman in distress was no longer responding to officers or accepting help.
Police officers closed I-84 in both directions between Interstate 5 and Interstate 205 around 8 p.m. as they responded to a crisis involving a person. According to police, the woman was sitting on the railing of the Northeast 12th Avenue overpass.
Police sent out officers trained with specialty crisis communication skills to assist the person on the Blumenauer Bridge.
Portland police tweeted just before 10 p.m. that they offered medical help. Around 12:41 p.m., police said the woman would no longer engage with them. Several officers and a sergeant remained on scene to monitor the situation.
If you or someone you know is struggling, there is help available through mental health services.
