Pedestrian killed, driver seriously injured in Northeast Portland crash

PORTLAND, Ore. — For the second time in less than 24 hours, someone has died in a crash on the city streets after a pedestrian was hit by a vehicle late Saturday night.

Portland police said one person died at the scene after they were hit by a minivan at the intersection of East Burnside Street and Northeast 82nd Avenue around 11:37 p.m. They have not yet been identified.

The driver of the van hit a utility pole and was severely injured. Firefighters freed the driver from the wreckage, and they were transported to the hospital with injuries that are believed to be life-threatening. 

Video from the scene shows car parts including an engine scattered through the intersection.

This is the city's 53rd traffic fatality of the year and the second involving a pedestrian in under 24 hours. According to records kept by KGW, this is the 17th deadly crash involving a pedestrian this year.

Early Saturday morning, a person believed to be a man was found dead on the Southwest Naito Parkway ramp to the Morrison Bridge. He has not yet been identified. Police say the driver of the vehicle who hit the victim took off from the scene. Investigators have not given a description of the vehicle or suspect.
