CASCADE LOCKS, Ore. — A wrong-way driver died after causing multiple crashes on I-84 west of Cascade Locks on Monday, leading authorities to temporarily shut down the eastbound lanes.

Reports of a crash came in shortly before noon on Monday between Bonneville Dam and Multnomah Falls. The Oregon Department of Transportation initially reported that two crashes caused the shutdown of I-84 eastbound while emergency crews responded to the scene.

According to the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office, a wrong-way driver caused "multiple crash scenes" and was seriously injured. The driver, later identified as 34-year-old Brookelynn Fetters of Gresham, was taken to a hospital via Life Flight and later died.

In an update on Tuesday, Oregon State Police said Fetters, operating a Kia Rio, was traveling the wrong way down the Interstate 84 eastbound lane when she struck a BMW, the first of three collisions. Afterwards, the Kia continued to travel the wrong way down the interstate, and when attempting to make a U-turn near milepost 37, it was struck by an oncoming semi-truck. That collision pushed the Kia into a separate vehicle parked on the eastbound shoulder.

The other motorists involved were not injured, Oregon State Police said.

The highway was impacted for several hours during the on-scene investigation. The crash incident remains under investigation, according to Oregon State Police.
