PORTLAND, Ore. — A deadly crash shut down the southbound lanes of I-5 in North Portland on Thursday heading into the afternoon commute.

According to the Portland Police Bureau, officers responded to reports of a crash on southbound I-5 at North Failing Street just after 3:30 p.m. Officers arrived to find a crash involving multiple vehicles.

At least one person was dead at the scene, and police said the extent of further injuries is not yet known.

The Oregon Department of Transportation closed all southbound lanes of I-5 at North Alberta Street following the crash, diverting traffic to Going Street and back onto I-5 southbound at Greeley Street. The agency said it expected the closure to continue through the afternoon commute, causing lengthy delays.

PPB's Major Crash Team responded to investigate the crash, which contributed to the length of the closure. Anyone with more information about the crash is asked to contact crimetips@police.portlandoregon.gov and reference case number 23-280468.

As of 8:10 p.m., Portland police reported that the crash investigation on I-5 had wrapped and the freeway had been reopened to traffic.

This is a developing story and may be updated with more details as they emerge.
