Driver dies after crashing on Interstate 84, landing in the Columbia River

Oregon State Police said the driver hit a guardrail on Saturday morning, went down an embankment into the river near the Corbett Viewpoint.

CORBETT, Ore. — A person died after investigators say they crashed their vehicle through a guardrail on Interstate 84 westbound near the Corbett Viewpoint into the Columbia River on Saturday morning.

The driver was speeding according to Oregon State Police when they hit the guardrail near mile post 23, went down a 150 foot embankment and landed upside down in the river around 7:15 a.m.

The driver is identified as 31-year-old Gorgonio Reyes Barrera of Hermiston, Ore.

First responders removed Barrera from the vehicle and attempted life-saving measures.

The viewpoint was closed for about five hours for the investigation.
