PORTLAND, Ore. — Saturday's Portland State University football game with South Dakota has been canceled.

According to Mike Lund with Portland State Athletics, pertussis, also known as whooping cough, hit the team two days ago, and many players were exposed.

Both South Dakota and PSU decided that the game would be off in "the interest of the health of student-athletes." The game was to be held at Hillsboro Stadium.

None of the PSU Vikings are "seriously ill at this time," Lund said. PSU did not say how the outbreak originated.

Details on ticketing and refunds will be announced later. It is unknown at this time if the game will be rescheduled.

PSU is also scheduled to visit Boise State next Saturday.

This is a developing story; check back for updates.
