PARIS, France — The women's 10,000-meter final at the 2024 Summer Olympics clocked in at more than 30 minutes, but ended with a near photo finish.
Kenya’s Beatrice Chebet raced through the finish line with a time of 30:43.25 to claim her second gold medal of the Paris Olympics. She finished just ahead of Italy's Nadia Battocletti and Netherlands' Sifan Hassan.
Chebet became just the third woman in history to win the 10,000 meters and 5,000-meter race at the same Olympics.
Weini Kelati Frezghi was the highest finishing American in eighth, followed by Karissa Schweizer in ninth and Parker Valby in eleventh.
A scary scene unfolded during the race, when French athlete Alessia Zarbo went down on the track. She was attended to by medical staff as her fellow runners continued circling. Zarbo was eventually taken off the track on a stretcher.
A similar scene happened during the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase final. During that race, Ethiopia's Lamecha Girma took a rough fall while trying to jump over a barrier and remained motionless for a couple minutes. Medics rushed to aid the Ethiopian runner and he was quickly stretchered away with a neck brace.
