Paris Preview, August 7: Women's basketball reaches knockout stage

The seven-time defending champion U.S. is looking to extend its impressive Olympic winning streak.

PARIS, France — A'ja Wilson and the United States women's basketball team can move closer to their record eighth-consecutive Olympic gold medal Wednesday at the Paris Olympics.

Here's what to watch on Wednesday, August 7.

Women's basketball reaches knockout stage

The seven-time defending champion U.S. extended its impressive Olympic winning streak to 58 games Sunday. The U.S. women will take on Nigeria in the quarterfinals at 9:30 p.m. CEST/3:30 p.m. EDT at Bercy Arena.

Nigeria is the first African country to make the men’s or women’s elimination round at the Olympics.

Men's 400-meter final

The excitement in track and field continues with the men's 400-meter final at 3:20 p.m. EDT at the Stade de France.

Kirani James of Grenada had the fastest time in Tuesday's semifinals, finishing his heat in a season-best 43.78 seconds. Muzala Samukonga sprinted to the final in 43.81 seconds and set a Zambia national record. American Quincy Hall qualified at 43.95.

Americans Noah Lyles, Erriyon Knighton and Kenny Bednarak will compete in the 200-meter semifinals.

The men's discus final will start at 2:25 p.m. EDT, and the men's steeplechase final will round out the day's action at 3:43 p.m. EDT.

U.S. figure skaters get their medals

U.S. and Japanese figure skaters get their Beijing Winter Games medals exactly 2 ½ years after they earned them in a team event upended by a Russian doping case.

A presentation ceremony for skating’s team event from February 2022 will be held in Paris.

The U.S. and Japan placed second and third behind Russia but no team skating medals were awarded in Beijing because Russian teenage star Kamila Valieva within hours was implicated in a doping case that took almost two years to judge.

The U.S. skaters formally became Olympic champions after Russian appeals seeking to regain the title were dismissed last week by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

The medals will be awarded beneath the Eiffel Tower at the Champions Park site where VIPs watched the Paris Olympics opening ceremony.

Valieva was disqualified from the Beijing Olympics and banned for four years by a CAS panel of judges in January.
