Rupp, Crouser, Pebley qualify for Olympic events

Three athletes who grew up in Oregon qualified for Olympic events Friday night.

PORTLAND, Ore. – Three athletes who grew up in Oregon qualified for Olympic events Friday night.

Galen Rupp, the Central Catholic and University of Oregon track star, won the 10K at Hayward Field in Eugene with a time of 27 minutes, 55.04 seconds. Rupp won the silver medal in the 10K in the London Olympics. Rupp has already qualified for the marathon.

Ryan Crouser, who graduated from Barlow High School, captured the shot put title with a throw of over 72 feet. Crouser was a 6A state champion in shot put and discus while at Barlow. He went to college at the University of Texas, where he was a national champion.

In swimming, Corvallis native Jacob Pebley qualified for the Olympics in the 200-meter backstroke. Pebley finished second in the trials, only behind University of California teammate Ryan Murphy. Pebley graduated from Crescent Valley High School.
