Road to Rio: Ashton Eaton, Decathlon

As the reigning Olympic decathlon champion, Ashton is widely considered to hold the title of the “world’s greatest athlete.” He holds the decathlon world record (9,045 points), which he set at the 2015 World Championships after breaking his previous record set in 2012. He also holds the indoor heptathlon world record of 6,645 points. He is married to Canadian Olympian Brianne Theisen-Eaton. The two were teammates at the University of Oregon.

Eaton won the 2015 USATF Jesse Owens Male Athlete of the Year award after improving his world record in the decathlon to win the gold medal at the 2015 IAAF World Championships in Beijing. Eaton, the 2015 IAAF World Male Athlete of the Year, scored 9,045 points to top the field by more than 300 points. In the process, he set a world championships decathlon record of 10.23 seconds in the 100, and broke a 40-year-old world decathlon record with a time of 45.00 in the 400.
