LYON, France — After a 105th-minute game winner by Trinity Rodman in Saturday's 1-0 win against Japan, the U.S. women's soccer team has their sights set on a rematch against Germany in a semifinal match Tuesday morning.

On Sunday, July 28, Team USA thrashed Germany 4-1 behind two goals from Portland Thorns attacker Sophia Smith.

The U.S. narrowly knocked off Japan in the quarterfinal game Saturday. After a dull first 90 minutes led to overtime, Rodman knocked home the game winner to finish it off, 1-0.

Germany had an even tighter quarterfinal game against Canada as the Germans beat Canada in penalties after the two were tied 0-0 after 120 minutes of play.

These two titans of women's soccer both came out of Group B, where the U.S. went 3-0, while Germany went 2-1, with the only loss coming to the U.S.

Team USA has had a hot start to new head coach Emma Hayes' tenure, as the U.S. is leading the tournament in goals with 10 in total. Team USA's three attackers of Rodman, Smith and Mallory Swanson have done the bulk of the scoring, accounting for eight of the 10 goals the U.S. has scored.

While Team USA's previous result against Germany is a confidence builder, it's hard to expect a similar result this time around. Germany has scored eight goals thus far through the tournament, with their leading scorer Lea Schüller tied with Swanson and Rodman with three goals.

An advantage for the U.S. is they know how to expose the German defense, and while head coach Horst Hrubesch will make adjustments, Team USA knows what they're up against, unlike Japan.

Depending on the result against Germany, the U.S. will play Spain or Brazil in the final or bronze-medal game.

The nation of Spain has been red hot in the world of soccer during the past year, as the women won the 2023 World Cup, while this summer the men won the 2024 European Championship.

Meanwhile on the other side, Brazil's all-time great Marta is playing in her final major tournament for her country, trying to lead them to their first Olympic medal since 2008.
