PORTLAND, Ore. — Two Olympians from Oregon and southwest Washington are headed to the Paris Olympics after earning a spot on the U.S. women's gymnastics team.
Oregon State University's Jade Carey and Jordan Chiles, who has trained in Vancouver, Washington, competed in the gymnastics team trials. The competition was fierce, with only 10 total spots open on Team USA: five for men and five for women.
On Sunday, Team USA announced Simone Biles, Suni Lee, Jordan Chiles, Jade Carey and Hezly Rivera will make up the five-athlete U.S. women's gymnastics team.
Jade Carey
The reigning Olympic gold medalist hit a routine for a score of 14.150 on Sunday. Carey won the gold medal on floor in the Tokyo Olympics and has had an impressive career at Oregon State. She was the 13th NCAA gymnast to achieve a Gym Slam — scoring a perfect 10 on all four events. Carey was named the Pac-12 Gymnast of the Year in 2022 and 2023.
Jordan Chiles
Going into her final rotation, Chiles had some negative momentum but was able to stand her ground turning things around. Hitting her tumbling passes, dancing to Beyoncé resulted in a 14.100 score on floor.
Chiles won a silver medal with Team USA during the Tokyo Olympics. She also won team gold from the 2023 Pan American Games. Chiles led the U.S. team to its sixth straight gold medal at the 2022 World Championships.
