PARIS, France — Jordan Chiles from Vancouver, Washington, placed third in the women's gymnastics floor exercise on Monday with a score of 13.766, securing her second medal this Olympics.
Chiles was a last-second addition to the podium as she originally scored a 13.666, lower than Romania's Ana Borbosu and Sabrina Maneca-Voinea, who both scored 13.700. However, Chiles filed for an inquiry about the difficulty of her score and was awarded 0.1 points, vaulting her into third place.
Simone Biles took home the silver medal, just shy .033 points from gold medalist Rebeca Andrade of Brazil.
Chiles, who was born in Tualatin, Oregon but grew up in Vancouver, took part in four team events for the U.S. during the team final last week, placing fourth on the vault, seventh on the uneven bars, 20th on the beam and third during her floor exercise. The U.S. won gold in the team final.
The floor exercise was the only individual event that Chiles qualified for. She placed fourth in vault qualifying last week, but her scores were lower than U.S. teammates Biles and Carey. Each country is only allowed two competitors in the finals, therefore Chiles was left out from being able to compete in the vault final.
Chiles won a silver medal with the U.S. at the 2021 Tokyo Games, helping the Americans place second in the team event.
Chiles, who just wrapped up her sophomore year at UCLA, won multiple individual national championships with the Bruins in 2023. She will now return home with even more hardware to add to her already large trophy case.
This is a developing story and will be updated with more information as it becomes available.
