Eugene gets another shot at 2020 US track trials

"We are excited by the possibility of submitting a new bid," said TrackTown USA CEO Michael Reilly.

INDIANAPOLIS — The 2020 U.S. Olympic track trials are out for bid again and Eugene is excited about getting a second chance to host them.

The bidding for the trials was reopened because Mt. San Antonio College in southern California, which initially beat out Eugene for the bid in June 2017, is facing legal challenges over funding for its proposed stadium.

Michael Reilly, CEO of TrackTown USA, said they're still learning the details of Team USA's decision to reopen the bidding, but "we are excited by the possibility of submitting a new bid," he said.

Eugene has hosted the previous three track trials and will also host the 2021 world championships.

Reilly said the re-designed Hayward Field on the University of Oregon campus, slated to open in the spring of 2020, would be the ideal location for the 2020 trials.

"With the way this community has embraced the past three Olympic Trials ... I'm confident that the atmosphere would be electric," Reilly said.

The 2020 trials are scheduled for June 19-28. USATF hopes to re-award trials by June of this year.
