Former Philadelphia Eagles head coach and Chicago Bears defensive coordinator Buddy Ryan passed away Tuesday at the age of 82, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Ryan was known for his "46 Defense" that helped lead the Bears to a Super Bowl championship following the 1985 regular season. He served as the defensive coordinator under Mike Ditka in Chicago.
Following the Super Bowl win, Ryan was hired by the Eagles as the team's head coach. In five seasons, Ryan posted a 43-38-1 record. During his tenure, the Eagles made three playoff appearances. He was fired after the 1990 season.
Ryan joined the Houston Oilers staff in 1993 as the team's defensive coordinator but only lasted a year. He then became head coach of the Arizona Cardinals, where he posted a 12-20 record in two seasons.
Ryan's sons, Rex and Rob, are both notable NFL coaches. Rex Ryan is the current Buffalo Bills head coach and previously served in the same role with the New York Jets. Rob Ryan is currently on the Bills staff and has served as a defensive coordinator for several teams, including the New Orleans Saints and Cleveland Browns.
