PORTLAND, Ore. — The annual rivalry game is back on for the football programs at Oregon and Oregon State, according to a report from John Canzano.
The longtime Portland sports columnist and commentator reported that the Ducks and Beavers will play each other in Corvallis on Sept. 14 next season. And the series will continue beyond 2024, Canzano said, with the two schools playing each other at Autzen Stadium in 2025.
To make it happen for the 2024 season, other schools had to reschedule games against Oregon and Oregon State. According to Canzano, Texas Tech and Boise State moved games around to facilitate the renewal of the rivalry.
Texas Tech, which was scheduled to play at Oregon on Sept. 7, canceled that game, scheduling Washington State for that date instead. And Boise State, which was scheduled to play Oregon on Sept. 14, moved their game against the Ducks a week earlier. The Broncos were scheduled to play Oregon State on Sept. 7, but will instead play Oregon at Autzen Stadium on that date.
Oregon released its 2024 schedule on Nov. 2, with Oregon State notably omitted from the list of games. If the two schools didn't face off next season, it would have been the first time they didn't play each other since 1944. But the two schools worked hard behind the scenes to keep the 129-year-old rivalry alive (the first game was played in 1894), even though they won't be in the same conference anymore.
The Ducks will move to the Big Ten starting next season, while Oregon State, along with Washington State, is one of just two remaining schools in the Pac-12.
Oregon State's schedule is coming together. It was announced last week that Oregon State and Washington State reached an agreement with the Mountain West to play six games each against schools from that conference, which will help fill out the schedule.
The Beavers also have games scheduled at home against Purdue, Oregon and Idaho State in 2024, and Canzano reports that Oregon State is negotiating with Cal for a home-and-home series starting in 2024 and with another "Power 4" opponent, "believed to be the University of Virginia."
