EUGENE, Ore. — Oregon made it official Wednesday, announcing the hire of University of Texas San Antonio (UTSA) assistant Will Stein as its new offensive coordinator.
"Oregon has become synonymous with explosive offense and dynamic playmakers, and I am so excited to be a part of such a powerful national brand," Stein said. "Coach [Dan] Lanning and the rest of the staff are building something really special, and I can't wait to get to work with these student-athletes both on the field and getting to know them as young men."
The news that Oregon was planning to hire Stein broke Monday. Matt Zenitz of On3 was first to report the news. It was later confirmed by ESPN, the Oregonian and numerous other outlets.
Stein, 33, will replace Kenny Dillingham, the former Ducks offensive coordinator who left Oregon when he was hired as head coach at Arizona State. Stein will take over a dynamic Oregon offense that ranks fourth in yards per game (507.8) and ninth in points per game (39.7) this season heading into a Holiday Bowl appearance against North Carolina.
Promoted to co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach prior to the start of this season, Stein helped lead the UTSA offense to a No. 9 national ranking in total offense (486.1 yards per game). Under Stein's direction, UTSA quarterback Frank Harris thrived this season, throwing for 3,865 yards and 31 touchdowns and rushing for 588 yards and nine touchdowns.
"Will has done a great job developing dynamic quarterbacks in his career, and he is able to see the game through a different lens as a former quarterback himself," said Oregon football head coach Dan Lanning in a news release Wednesday. "He is a tremendous teacher and a tireless worker, and his focus on the student-athlete experience aligns with our philosophy here in Eugene. I am excited to see our team and offense reach new heights under his leadership and direction with our entire offensive staff."
UTSA's offense also ranks 12th in passing offense (308.6 yards per game), 12th in passing touchdowns (33) and 49th in rushing offense (177.5 yards per game) and are tied for 25th in rushing touchdowns (28).
The Roadrunners (11-2, 8-0) won the Conference USA title this season.
Stein has spent the past three seasons at UTSA. Prior to this season, when he served as co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, he was the school's passing game coordinator and wide receivers coach. A former college football player, he was a quarterback at Louisville from 2008 to 2012.
